POLARI PRESENTS SOCIOSEX FILM COMMUNITY ACTION CENTER WITH DIRECTORS IN ATTENDANCE!

Artists A.K. Burns & A.L. Steiner are launching a 2013 US Tour of their sociosex film COMMUNITY ACTION CENTER and coming (!) to Austin for a special screening at the North Door. Polari is excited to present this wildly imagintive film featuring the very queer talents of folks from MEN, Lesbians on Ecstasy and Light Asylum to Justin Vivian Bond and Wu Tsang. This screening is co-presented with our friends at Experimental Response Cinema.

COMMUNITY ACTION CENTER incorporates the erotics of a community where the personal is not only political, but sexual. This project was heavily inspired by 1970’s porn-romance-liberation films which served as distinct portraits of the urban inhabitants, landscapes and the body politic of a particular time and place. COMMUNITY ACTION CENTER is a unique contemporary womyn-centric composition that serves as both an ode and a hole-filler. Sex, sexuality and the complexities of gendered bodies are inherently political. This project is a small archive of an intergenerational community built on collaboration, friendship, sex and art.

POLARI’S QUEER GUIDE TO AJFF & CINE LAS AMERICAS!

SXSW may have ended last month, but the film festival season is still sparkling in Austin, TX. Two of Polari’s community partners – The Austin Jewish Film Festival (AJFF) and Cine Las Americas – are rolling out this week and we could not be more excited to see all of the cinematic goodies that they have in store. We are, of course, especially excited about the strong LGBT showings in each festival, and below you will find a list of their LGBT offerings (in chronological order by festival). Polari is a proud community sponsor of each of these films.

POLARI IS NOW ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS FOR THE QUEER YOUTH MEDIA PROJECT!

Polari is pleased to announce the return of the Queer Youth Media Project (QYMP), our annual FREE summer film workshop for LGBT and ally youths, which will take place from July 22– August 2, 2013. This workshop is presented in partnership with the Austin School of Film (ASoF) and will be facilitated by the very talented local filmmaker Even Roberts (33 TEETH, KEAH KOWALSKI!).

We are very proud of this exciting and empowering program, which not only teaches LGBT and ally youths the entire filmmaking process from pre-production through festival exhibition, but also provides a rare opportunity for often isolated LGBT and ally youths to connect and create in a fun, supportive, and collaborative environment. At Polari we believe that every story is important and that is vital to provide LGBT and ally youths with tools for self-expression. Accordingly, all LGBT and ally youths (approximately age 14-19) are encouraged to apply. Everyone is welcome, from those who have filmmaking ambitions, to those who just want to make new friends while participating in a cool and creative activity.
